Iranian Representative at Geneva Conference: Those Responsible for War Crimes in Gaza Must Be Tried

Hamid Reza Hajibabaei, the Deputy Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, who traveled to Geneva to participate in the Inter-Parliamentary World Summit, warned: "Any ceasefire or temporary agreement should not mean forgetting justice and criminal responsibility for criminals, and the international community has a duty to identify and prosecute the perpetrators of war crimes and genocide in Gaza."

According to Ashura News, citing IRNA, Haji Babaei raised this issue today (Sunday, October 17, 2021) at the meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the Islamic Conference (PUIC), which was held on the topic of the consequences of the Zionist regime's war in Gaza and on the sidelines of the 151st session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva.

He pointed out that one of the fundamental goals of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Union of Islamic Parliaments is to promote peace and peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue, cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy, and stated: "Today, we are facing a great test; a test of human conscience and the effectiveness of the international system in the face of the ongoing humanitarian disaster in Gaza."

Our country's representative stated at the meeting: "The occupying and genocidal Zionist regime, with the direct support of the United States of America and some Western governments, has committed this horrific crime. These actions have weakened the foundations of the global multilateral system and discredited international institutions, institutions whose philosophy of existence has been to maintain global peace and justice.”

He also noted: “With its repeated aggressions against countries in the region, this regime has made the UN Security Council incapable of playing its main role in maintaining global peace and security, and decades of impunity have contributed to the continuation of these tragedies.”

The Deputy Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly emphasized: “We believe that only through the unity of the Islamic Ummah, parliamentary solidarity, and the restoration of global justice can the course of history be changed towards a free, secure, and just future for the Palestinian people and the region, and a lasting and honorable peace can be achieved.”

He continued: "The Islamic Republic of Iran, while welcoming any effort and initiative to immediately stop the war and allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, always supports any measure that includes stopping the genocide, withdrawing the occupying forces, releasing Palestinian prisoners, and realizing the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people. It has used all of its diplomatic capacities, especially at the regional level, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the United Nations, to pressure the Zionist regime and its supporters to stop the crimes and withdraw the occupiers from Gaza." Haji Babaei concluded by warning: "Any ceasefire or temporary agreement should not mean forgetting justice and criminal responsibility for the criminals, and the international community has a duty to identify and prosecute the perpetrators and perpetrators of war crimes and genocide in Gaza."
