The Wall Street Journal reported in a report that Iran and the United States are trying to reach a framework before a final agreement.
According to Ashura News, citing Mehr News Agency, the Wall Street Journal has addressed the fifth round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States in Rome in an exclusive report.
The report states: Currently, the US and Iran are holding talks aimed at reaching a political understanding to determine the key principles of a future agreement. Technical and comprehensive discussions on the final details to reach a definitive agreement will take place after this initial understanding is reached.
The report adds: This process is somewhat similar to the interim agreement before the JCPOA in 2013, which set the framework for the final agreement. But that process took 18 months, and this time there is no guarantee that a final agreement will be achieved. This could buy Iran a lot of time. Also, reaching a framework agreement during the Trump era may tie Israel's hands.
The report continues: The main point of disagreement to reach an understanding remains the issue of enrichment. Without agreement on “zero” or “some” enrichment, there is no way to move forward with the details of the deal. Otherwise, the same political differences will repeat themselves on this point.
The Wall Street Journal adds: Our analysis may also shed some light on a few other things: When Trump talks about a deal being close, if the enrichment issue is resolved, they are likely close to a political understanding that he can present as a major achievement. Of course, this does not mean a real, final agreement.
