A young Iranian researcher who won the Mustafa Medal for Scientist Under 40 (Islamic World) succeeded in stopping the growth of cancerous tumors by presenting a new model for cancer treatment.
According to Ashura News, quoted by Mehr News Agency: Sepideh Mirzaei, an Iranian researcher and winner of the Mustafa Young Scientist Medal (Islamic World), explained her research project today on the sidelines of the Mustafa Young Scientists Award Ceremony and said: My project, which was selected today, is in the field of medical bioscience and technology and regulating drug resistance factors in cancer treatment based on molecular pathways.
Referring to the vital function of NF-κB in regulating more than 400 genes in the body, Mirzaei said: When properly regulated, this pathway helps with immunity and survival, but when overactive, it leads to cancer growth and metastasis and drug resistance.
She added: Our research shows that RNAs, especially miRNAs, can control NF-κB activity like precise switches. Some of these miRNAs inhibit it and increase the sensitivity of cancer cells to treatment.
Mirzaei emphasized: In addition to miRNAs, lncRNA and circRNA molecules also play an important role in regulating this pathway and can cooperate or compete with miRNAs and ultimately change tumorigenic pathways.
He continued: Understanding this complex network has led us to design targeted and personalized therapies; therapies that can stop cancer progression by turning off the NF-κB trigger.
According to this Iranian researcher, some antitumor drugs can increase suppressive miRNAs and thereby inhibit the carcinogenic pathway.
He added: Our therapeutic model is a combination of drugs and regulatory RNAs that not only stops tumor growth but also breaks drug resistance.
According to Mehr, the first Mustafa Young Scientist Medal was awarded to scientists under 40 years of age, and the winners of this medal received a cash prize of $10,000. This award, which is awarded from the proceeds of the awards of the two previous winners of the Mustafa (PBUH) Award, was formed to encourage young scientists in the Islamic world and honor their influential achievements, as a symbol of the scientific merit and excellence of the young elite generation.
The Young Scientist Medal will be awarded every 2 years as part of the Mustafa (PBUH) Award Week programs.
