According to Ashura News, quoted by Mehr News Agency, First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, speaking at the International Conference on the Protection of Glaciers in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, this morning (Friday) local time, condemned the crimes of the Zionist regime against the people of Gaza, saying: "A more important issue than the environmental challenge that the civilized world is facing is the cruelty that the Zionist regime is inflicting on the dear, oppressed, innocent and deprived people of Gaza, and human rights and international institutions have remained silent on this issue despite their duties."

He added: "International institutions, elites and countries of the world must condemn this inhuman and brutal behavior and find a way to achieve a logical and reasonable ceasefire, which is the right of the oppressed Palestinian people."

The text of Aref's speech is as follows:

Your Excellencies, Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan

Your Excellencies

Ladies and Gentlemen

I am pleased to be present at this international conference in the beautiful city of Dushanbe at the invitation of the friendly and brotherly country of the Republic of Tajikistan, and I thank you and the organizers of this important meeting.

As you know, the crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution are three issues facing the world and can affect environmental processes in various ways and harm human health and the environment. Glaciers, as hidden sources of fresh water, are a valuable treasure for the inhabitants of the earth, and their protection will ensure water security. Given the increasing trend of global warming, these strategic and vital freshwater reserves are under threat, and their protection requires comprehensive environmental and social diplomatic measures, as the melting of glaciers has raised concerns about flooding, soil erosion and the destruction of economic infrastructure in the world.

We appreciate the alignment of the efforts of the international community to develop effective strategies for the protection of glaciers as the main objective of this conference, as well as the adoption of the United Nations General Assembly resolution to declare the International Year of Glaciers (following the proposal of Tajikistan) and the resolution to declare the years 2025-2034 as the Decade of Action for Cryosphere Science.

Dear audience

Due to its arid and semi-arid climate, Iran has always been highly dependent on water resources from melting snow and natural glaciers. Iran, as one of the oldest civilizations in the world, has created a special traditional system for water management over thousands of years, especially in conditions of water scarcity. The construction of aqueducts (underground water transport networks without evaporation), advanced irrigation networks, and water storage facilities are among the smart solutions on which Iranian civilization is based.

Today, Iran has created a bridge between the traditional system and modern technology in water management by combining indigenous knowledge and advanced technologies. In addition to preserving historical structures as cultural heritage and exploitable infrastructure, we have implemented extensive development projects that include the construction of modern, pressurized irrigation dams with advanced irrigation technologies, water recycling technology, and desalination technology.

Your Excellencies

Dear Guests

The world needs innovative and equitable solutions to prevent social tensions, forced migration, and the instability of local communities' livelihoods, while turning challenges into opportunities and ensuring water security for all. By strengthening international cooperation, we can turn these challenges into opportunities and build a future in which sustainable water management supports a flourishing society, Sustainable food systems and healthy ecosystems worldwide.

I hope that this conference will lead to the development of multilateral cooperation and the exchange of experience and knowledge between countries, and to the strengthening of urgent practical measures, such as the implementation of effective programs for resilience to drought and floods, and the empowerment of local communities in the face of melting glaciers and the decline of water resources.

Thank you for your attention.
